The holidays always seem to turn the volume up on everything. The joy feels louder, the stress feels louder, and everyone suddenly has extra opinions they feel obligated to share. Over the last few seasons, I have made protecting my peace a priority, especially when conversations start getting a little too spicy.

You know those moments at the dinner table when someone brings up a topic that has no business being discussed over food? You can feel the room shift, the tension rising, and suddenly it feels like you are sitting under a heat lamp. In those moments, I have learned to gently step in with a redirect. I simply say, “Ok, this topic is getting a little heated, let’s change it.” I keep it light, I keep it calm, and it works every single time. Nobody feels attacked, but everybody gets the message.

Then there are the moments when someone tries to lure you into a debate you never signed up for. My favorite response is, “I hear you, but I am not going there today.” Short, clear, and respectful. It protects my energy and reminds people that my boundaries are not just suggestions.

And sometimes the best move is to simply step away. If the room gets heavy, I will say, “I am going to grab some air real quick.” Two minutes outside can save you from two hours of unnecessary stress.

But let me tell you about one moment that really taught me the power of standing firm in my peace. A couple of years ago, one of my cousins got a little too curious about my dating life. Every time she got near me she would slide in with, “So who are you seeing now?” or “When are you finally going to settle down?” or “Come on, give me something.” I laughed it off the first few times, but she kept going like she had been hired by a production company to get exclusive details.

Finally, I looked at her and said, “I love you, but my dating life is not up for discussion today.” I said it with a smile, a calm tone, and eye contact that let her know I meant every word. She paused, nodded, and changed the subject. And you know what, the rest of the night was peaceful. No tension, no attitude, no drama. Just a clear boundary that kept the night from turning into an interrogation scene.

That is the lesson. You do not have to fix your family dynamics, you do not have to respond to every question, and you do not have to carry anyone’s mood on your shoulders. You are allowed to choose calm. You are allowed to choose peace. You are allowed to create a holiday experience that feels good to you.

As we step deeper into the season, remember this: you are in control of the energy you welcome. If something leans toward chaos, redirect it, step away from it, or shut it down with kindness. Your peace is worth protecting, especially right now.
