Some places never lose their magic.
For Ciara and me, one of those places has always been the Petting Farm at Domino’s Farms. Every summer, especially in those early weeks when the weather is warm but not unbearable, we find ourselves making the trip back. It’s become one of our favorite local traditions.
There’s something incredibly calming about slowing down for a few hours and spending time with animals. No notifications, no deadlines, no pressure to be productive. Just sunshine, fresh air, and a farm full of curious faces waiting to say hello.

The best part of visiting during early summer is seeing all of the babies. Tiny goats, fluffy chicks, playful lambs, and curious calves are everywhere, reminding you just how beautiful this season can be. It’s impossible not to smile.

This visit, though, one animal completely stole the show.
Meet Mark…a name I gave him:)

This handsome and feisty goat who apparently decided I belonged exclusively to him. The moment he realized I had a bag of carrots, our friendship became very one-sided. His expectations were clear: every single carrot belonged to him.
Whenever I tried sharing with another goat nearby, Mark would let out the loudest bleat you’ve ever heard. Yes, that’s what a goat’s “baa” is actually called, a bleat, and Mark had absolutely no problem using his voice.
It felt less like feeding a farm animal and more like negotiating with a very opinionated toddler.
Needless to say, Mark eventually got what he wanted. An entire bag of carrots.
I regret nothing.

Moments like these remind me why I enjoy places like this so much. We spend so much of our lives rushing from one obligation to another that we forget how refreshing simple experiences can be. You don’t always need an expensive vacation or elaborate plans to recharge. Sometimes all you need is a quiet afternoon, someone you enjoy spending time with, and a stubborn goat named Wally who believes you’re his personal snack delivery service.
If you’re looking for something fun, affordable, and genuinely relaxing to do this summer, I highly recommend visiting the Petting Farm at Domino’s Farms. Whether you’re bringing kids, planning a date, spending time with family, or simply looking for a peaceful afternoon by yourself, it’s one of those places that reminds you to slow down and enjoy where you are.
Just one piece of advice…
Buy the extra bag of carrots.
Trust me.
If you’d like to plan your own visit, you can find admission information, hours, seasonal events, and directions on the official website: The Petting Farm at Domino’s Farms. Before you go, it’s also worth checking their calendar of events to see what’s happening during your visit. The farm is home to more than 100 animals and operates as a nonprofit dedicated to connecting visitors with Michigan’s agricultural heritage.
Have you ever met an animal with a personality bigger than life itself? I’d love to hear about it in the comments. Maybe Mark has some competition.
